Most people tear open a condiment packet, squeeze out the last drop and toss the wrapper without a second thought. Eric Thompson sees something beyond: a tiny piece of design, advertising and everyday history. Across his Texas home, thousands of these disposable packets have been transformed from fast-food leftovers into a meticulously organized archive. Meet Eric, a 39-year-old computer engineer from Helotes who has amassed roughly 5,000 single-serving sauce packets, turning an ordinary dining accessory into an unusually detailed collecting hobby.According to a report by the San Antonio Express-News, Thompson’s collection spans ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, relish, barbecue sauce, honey, jelly, seafood sauces, vinegar and numerous Asian condiments. Even Whataburger’s small, box-shaped ketchup tubs have earned a place in the archive. Around 3,100 individual designs have been cataloged in his online Condiment Packet Archive, where packets are organized by brand, color, date and flavor. His collection also appears on TikTok, where he shares discoveries and the stories behind unusual designs. Hot sauce is the largest category, with about 760 designs. Taco Bell is the standout brand, accounting for nearly 400 distinct packets. The chain’s wide range of sauces and frequent use of humorous packaging have made its packets particularly collectible.
From a college rainbow to a serious archive
As per the same online report, Thompson’s fascination began in 2007 while he was studying at Penn State. A colorful arrangement of condiment packets caught his attention, creating what looked like a miniature rainbow across a communal food area. When the arrangement later disappeared after a vendor change, Thompson saved several of the remaining packets. What began as an appreciation for the visual arrangement gradually developed into an interest in documenting the evolution of condiment packaging. Today, he tries to collect at least three copies of each new design. One becomes part of the archive, while additional examples can be kept for trading or preservation.
Cleaning, cataloging and preserving every packet
The process is considerably more involved than simply picking up discarded wrappers. Thompson carefully opens each packet, empties the contents—often using them with his meals—and then washes and dries the packaging. Once clean, the packet is cataloged and placed inside a protective plastic sleeve similar to those used for trading cards. The sleeves are organized in color-coded containers, although hundreds of packets remain in the queue awaiting processing. Thompson estimates he averages about five packets a night. The collection includes several hundred vintage examples from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Its oldest item is particularly unusual: a squeezable Fuller Brush Company toothpaste packet dating to 1950.Tiny packages with a big historyThe collection also provides a window into how companies use color, typography and packaging to communicate with consumers. Red commonly signals ketchup, while yellow suggests mustard, creating visual expectations before a packet is even opened. Thompson is particularly interested in designs that break those conventions, including unusual colors and generic packaging that reveal different approaches to branding. His Heinz collection alone contains 309 different packets from the United States, Europe and the United Kingdom. Rare finds also turn up through online marketplaces and donations from collectors around the world.
Preserving everyday Americana
Thompson’s collection has now earned a place in Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Wired into Weird, the franchise’s 23rd annual collection of unusual people and discoveries. What makes the archive remarkable is not simply its size. These tiny two-by-three-inch packages document changing tastes, advertising styles, restaurant culture and consumer habits.
