Nike has unveiled its first running shoe designed specifically for India, priced at Rs 3,795, as the US sportswear giant seeks to tap the country’s growing running community while grappling with falling sales in key markets, including China. The shoe, called Vegam Run, will be available on Flipkart and at select retail outlets from November 1, Nike said on Wednesday. The company developed the product in roughly five months, working with Indian runners to understand their needs across running, training and everyday movement.Nike said the shoe combines cushioning, breathability and durability with a design intended for both daily runs and frequent everyday wear. It features an engineered mesh upper, full-length foam cushioning and a textured rubber outsole. The company described the product as a more accessible entry point into Nike Running. The launch comes as global sportswear brands look to capitalise on India’s growing interest in running and fitness. Nike is also seeking to strengthen its presence in the country, having announced plans earlier this month to open a new campus in India.According to Reuters, the move comes as Nike faces persistent weakness in China, where sales have declined for nine consecutive quarters.China accounts for about 15% of Nike’s annual revenue. The company’s shares have fallen more than 40% so far this year, although its global running business has grown by double digits for six consecutive quarters, Reuters reported.Nike chief executive Elliott Hill is betting on a revamped product pipeline to revive growth, with locally developed designs expected to play an important role in key markets.“Our ambition with Vegam Run was simple: Honor the voice of the runner in India and build what they need,” Deepa Ramprasad, senior director of Nike Road Running Footwear, said in the company’s announcement.Nike said it moved from the design brief to a confirmed product in 55 days, with the full process taking about five months. The shoe is expected to reach additional international markets in 2027, with wider distribution through Nike’s Indian partners planned for spring 2027.
