It was picture-perfect—or almost. The smiles were present, if slightly stretched, as former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and state Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring exchanged words on a public platform after a long time. Strategically flanked by Channi and Raja Warring stood Sachin Pilot, who could be seen occasionally speaking to both leaders. The carefully orchestrated moment unfolded during a state-wide Congress protest over the Gulzar Singh suicide case, marking Pilot’s maiden visit to Punjab as the newly appointed AICC state in-charge.

Behind the scenes, Pilot’s ability to bring the warring factions together stems from a clear directive from Rahul Gandhi: stop public infighting and ensure open communication among senior leaders. Upon taking charge, Pilot met each leader separately, listened to their grievances, and laid down a strict boundary: while leaders retain internal flexibility, no public statements against one another will be tolerated, and the leadership must present a united front.

Pilot’s appointment replaces former Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel, whom Warring’s internal opponents viewed as overly supportive of the state chief. By making the switch, the Congress high command hopes to buy critical time and space to stabilise the state unit. The protracted internal feuding has already allowed political rivals—including the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)—to gain ground.

Crucially, the party faces a growing challenge from the radical outfit Waris Punjab De, previously led by radical preacher Amritpal Singh. The movement has gained traction among rebellious and disillusioned youth—a key demographic the Congress aimed to reclaim. The party leadership is betting on Pilot’s youth appeal to connect with disgruntled young voters and counter the radical group’s momentum.

However, the public display of unity may prove to be only a temporary pause ahead of a planned bus yatra featuring Rahul Gandhi. There is no guarantee that those sharing the stage will maintain solidarity throughout the campaign.

Pilot’s next major test will be ticket distribution for upcoming elections. Each faction will aggressively lobby for its own loyalists, making balanced allocation a delicate balancing act. For now, the leadership has avoided replacing Raja Warring, who maintains a strong rapport with Rahul Gandhi. While Pilot has been brought in to steer a turnaround in the party’s fortunes, deep-seated undercurrents of mistrust mean that lasting unity will require far more than a single joint appearance.

Sachin Pilot replaced former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel because state Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring’s internal opponents viewed Baghel as being overly supportive of the state chief. By making this leadership switch, the Congress high command hopes to buy critical time and space to stabilize the state unit amid deep-seated internal feuding.

During the protest in Chandigarh over the suicide of Dalit agricultural labourer Gulzar Singh, the Punjab Congress demanded that Punjab’s Finance Minister, Harpal Cheema, take responsibility and immediately resign from his post. The party also demanded that a case (FIR) be registered against him and that he be arrested, accusing the Bhagwant Mann government of trying to cover up the matter.

Rahul Gandhi gave Sachin Pilot a clear directive to stop public infighting and ensure open communication among senior leaders. In response, Pilot met with each leader individually to hear their grievances and established a strict boundary: while leaders retain internal flexibility, no public statements against one another will be tolerated, and they must present a united front.
