India have named veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in their squad for the upcoming ODI series against England, ending speculation over their immediate futures in the format. However, the biggest talking point from the selection is the omission of Yashasvi Jaiswal, who misses out despite scoring an unbeaten century in the recently concluded series against Afghanistan.

For the upcoming ODI series against England, India selected Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, omitting Yashasvi Jaiswal despite his unbeaten century against Afghanistan, as selectors prioritized experience citing preparations for the next ODI World Cup.

Selectors Back Experience For Crucial England Challenge

The decision to bring back Kohli, who missed the Afghanistan series due to injury, has strengthened India’s batting unit ahead of a challenging tour of England. Rohit also retains his place despite persistent discussions surrounding his long-term future in the ODI setup.

With captain Shubman Gill expected to continue at the top of the order alongside Rohit, the return of Kohli leaves little room in the batting lineup. As a result, Jaiswal, who had impressed during his limited opportunities, has been left out of the squad.

The selection reflects India’s preference for experience as preparations intensify for next year’s ODI World Cup.

Jaiswal’s Wait Continues Despite Making A Statement

Few players have experienced a more frustrating journey in India’s ODI setup than Jaiswal. Widely regarded as one of the country’s brightest batting talents, the left-hander has often found himself waiting for opportunities behind an established top order featuring Rohit, Kohli and Gill.

His latest chance came during the Afghanistan series when Kohli’s absence opened the door. After a disappointing outing in Lucknow, Jaiswal responded in style with an unbeaten 110 in Chennai, guiding India to victory and showcasing his ability to perform under pressure.

The century had strengthened his case for a place against England, but the return of senior players has once again pushed him down the pecking order.

Rohit Answers Questions With Important Knock

While Jaiswal’s century grabbed headlines, Rohit’s contribution in Chennai was equally significant. The former captain scored 79 and shared a 170-run opening partnership with Jaiswal, helping India comfortably chase down the target.

The innings arrived at a crucial time for Rohit, whose position has been a subject of debate despite maintaining respectable numbers in ODIs. The veteran batter has continued to score runs, but scrutiny over his place in India’s long-term plans has remained intense.

His performance against Afghanistan offered a timely reminder of his value, and the selectors have now rewarded that effort with another opportunity in England.

Gill Had Indicated Tough Selection Calls Ahead

Following India’s win in Chennai, Gill had hinted that difficult decisions were inevitable once all players became available for selection.

“I mean, it’s a good kind of headache to have, having all the players that are performing. And I think the squad will be announced either tomorrow or in the next couple of days. We’ll see where everyone’s fitness is. If everyone is fit, like I said, the squad will be announced and we’ll see who is in the squad and based on the squad, we’ll try to make the best XI possible,” Gill had said.

Speaking specifically about Jaiswal, Gill acknowledged the challenge of breaking into a settled batting order.

“Honestly, we all know he (Jaiswal) is a phenomenal player and it’s not easy for any player. If all the players are available, he is the unfortunate one who sometimes misses out and because Virat bhai was not available in this series, he had the opportunity. He got a couple of games and he played really well today. So hopefully, he will continue the form and he will continue to keep grabbing the opportunities that he gets.”

For now, India’s management has chosen continuity and experience, but Jaiswal’s recent performances ensure that he remains firmly in contention whenever the next opportunity arises.
