Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar believes tougher punishment must be handed down to young Indian players Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi over their on-field altercations.

Manjrekar said in his comments, that condoning such situations with mild punishment might instill wrong traits and provide an invitation to the young cricketers for similar behavior in the future. The remarks followed Jaiswal and Sri Lankan paceman Asitha Fernando being fined and having their match fee halved and receiving one demerit point each in the second Test for clashing during Colombo. It was admitted by each player of the wrongdoings pertaining to the Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct regarding inappropriate physical contact.

Sanjay Manjrekar advocates for stricter punishments for cricketers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi following their recent on-field altercations, warning that lenient penalties could encourage future misbehavior.

The altercation materialized during the first day of the Test. Jaiswal got caught in the cover for the Sri Lankan pacer who gave the India batter a flamboyant sending-off prompting Jaiswal into argument, which led to head-on contact as they approached one another.

However, for Manjrekar it’s only one incident as he brought up the recently witnessed confrontation during an India A tri-series against Sri Lanka A between young cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and others during a match that was concluded via Super Over on a June afternoon, in Dambulla. Sooryavanshi was seen engaging in a heated exchange of words towards the Sri Lanka players as tensions rose with other players mediating at the instance.

Manjrekar argued if young Indians were receiving adequate punishments for such infractions and taking a Twitter he warned the ICC and BCCI that successive light treatment could spur more misbehavior.

“Vaibhav for Ind A recently & now Jaiswal… If you keep letting them get away with this behaviour you train them to repeat such behaviour. It’s not good for the sport & crucially their own future too,” he had tweeted.

His statements comes amid heated discussions among circles about a young batter’s reaction to aggressive intent while the duo is considered crucial to Indian Cricket.

This affair points towards strict actions by the authorities towards the cricketers, crossing lines on the pitch.
