Former India batter VVS Laxman could be handed a significantly expanded role in Indian cricket, with reports suggesting that the BCCI is considering appointing him as its next Director of Cricket.

Laxman, who currently heads the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, is reportedly being considered for the key position as the board looks to restructure its cricket operations. If appointed, the move would expand the former batter’s existing responsibilities and place him in a more prominent administrative role within the BCCI.

Reports suggest the BCCI is considering VVS Laxman, head of its Bengaluru Centre of Excellence, for an expanded role as Director of Cricket as part of an operational restructuring, though the board has not confirmed this.

However, the board has not officially confirmed Laxman’s appointment or indicated when such a restructuring could take place. The exact responsibilities attached to the proposed Director of Cricket position also remain unclear.

Laxman has already been closely involved with the development and management of India’s cricketing ecosystem through his role at the Centre of Excellence. His possible elevation could therefore give him a wider role in overseeing various aspects of the sport beyond the current remit of the CoE.

The reported development comes at a crucial time for Indian cricket, with the national team preparing for a two-Test series against Sri Lanka as part of the ongoing World Test Championship cycle.

India, led by Shubman Gill, will face Sri Lanka in the first Test at Galle from August 15, followed by the second Test in Colombo from August 23.

With India needing strong results in the upcoming WTC fixtures to remain in contention for the final, Laxman’s potential elevation could mark an important change in the way the BCCI manages its cricketing operations.
