A profile of Nanakdeen Bhurji, BJP OBC Morcha’s state general secretary, whose death after a fall from the 7th floor has sparked murder complaint even as police lean toward suicide

Mulayam reportedly told him to resign from his government job in exchange for a minister’s post — an offer Bhurji accepted without hesitation.
Nanakdeen Bhurji, state general secretary of the BJP’s Backward Class Morcha and a former state minister, died after falling from the seventh floor of the new MLA residence in Lucknow’s Darulshafa. While his younger brother has alleged murder in a police complaint, investigators say evidence at the scene points toward suicide, with the probe still ongoing.
Who Was Nanakdeen Bhurji?
Bhurji began his career as a low-level employee in Uttar Pradesh’s state property department, according to Navbharat Times. He came into frequent contact with Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav, who is said to have been impressed by Bhurji’s hold over the OBC community and his dedication to work.
Mulayam reportedly told him to resign from his government job in exchange for a minister’s post — an offer Bhurji accepted without hesitation, going on to serve as a state minister of rank in the SP government, per the report.
His association with the SP ended after the Amar Singh episode, during which Bhurji is said to have made statements against Mulayam Singh Yadav at Amar Singh’s instance, permanently shutting SP’s doors to him, Navbharat Times reported.
He joined the BJP around 16 years ago and for a long time was a regular presence at the party’s state office, working to bring OBC communities into the fold — though he had reportedly stopped visiting the office in recent months.
What Led Up To His Death?
According to Navbharat Times, political circles suggest Bhurji had been seeking a dignified party post or an MLC ticket, and had recently travelled to Delhi to meet Union home minister Amit Shah and defence minister Rajnath Singh in this regard.
He is said to have grown depressed after receiving no concrete assurance, compounded by financial pressure, the report claimed.
On the day of the incident, which is Tuesday, police said Bhurji reached the new MLA residence around 2 pm and asked a helper present at BJP MLA Hansuram’s flat to bring coffee, before the helper returned to find the room empty.
Noise was heard outside soon after, and people found Bhurji lying on the ground in serious condition; police rushed him to the civil hospital, where he was declared dead, according to Dainik Bhaskar.
What Do Police And Family Say?
Bhurji’s younger brother, Pradeep Kumar Gupta, has filed a complaint at Hazratganj Kotwali accusing Mohammad Arif, caretaker of MLA Hansuram, of murder, and has demanded an impartial investigation, Dainik Bhaskar reported.
Police, however, said the investigation so far and evidence found at the scene point toward suicide, while adding that both aspects of the case are being examined and the probe is ongoing.
When And Where Will Last Rites Take Place?
Bhurji’s last rites took place on Wednesday at Bhaisakund. His final journey began in the morning from his residence in Khadra, Madeganj, during which his wife Manju Devi reportedly fainted.
