The TMC chief said the issue was bigger than her personally and accused the BJP of seeking to create an India where “political opponents are threatened, dissent is punished, and constitutional rights become privileges granted by those in power.”

The TMC chief said the issue was bigger than her personally and accused the BJP of seeking to create an India where “political opponents are threatened, dissent is punished, and constitutional rights become privileges granted by those in power.”

Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee on Monday hit back at West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari over his reported remark that he would ensure she was not allowed to step out of her home, accusing the BJP of threatening political opponents and undermining constitutional rights.

Banerjee shared a video of Adhikari’s remarks on X, in which he appeared to say, “You don’t have to come out on the streets and I will make sure that you are not even allowed to step out onto the streets.”

Reacting to the statement, Banerjee alleged that the BJP was trying to create an atmosphere where dissent is suppressed and political opponents are intimidated.

“A sitting Chief Minister, sworn to uphold that very Constitution, openly threatens to curtail the freedom of the Chairperson of the principal opposition party, AITC. The words were unambiguous: ‘I will ensure you cannot leave the house.’ What exactly does that mean? House arrest? Intimidation? Political persecution?” she said in a post on X.

“Who gave you the authority to decide who gets to move freely in a constitutional democracy?” Banerjee added.

The TMC chief said the issue was bigger than her personally and accused the BJP of seeking to create an India where “political opponents are threatened, dissent is punished, and constitutional rights become privileges granted by those in power.”

‘I Won’t Take Political Sanyas’

Banerjee also rejected suggestions that she would retire from politics, saying she would continue her political fight against the BJP.

In a Facebook Live session, she said, “Those who think I will take ‘sanyas’ from politics simply because I am denied permission are mistaken. Our fight will not stop until the BJP itself is forced into political retirement.”

She also alleged that the BJP government was preventing her from holding political meetings and claimed that people in West Bengal had “understood the true face of the BJP” within four months of the change in government.

Banerjee further alleged that citizens were facing “widespread intimidation” under the new government.

Abhishek Banerjee Backs Mamata

TMC leader and Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee also hit out at the BJP over the remarks, accusing the party of relying on threats and intimidation.

“When you cannot earn respect, you manufacture fear. The BJP’s politics of threats and intimidation only exposes its own insecurity,” he said.
