As West Bengal gears up for the 2026 Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has put a strong focus on tackling misinformation through its “Myth vs Reality” portal — an online tool designed to verify claims and counter fake news during the poll season.

Voting in the state will be held in two phases on April 23 and April 29, covering all 294 seats, with counting scheduled for May 4.

With high political stakes and millions of voters expected to participate, the spread of misinformation remains a key concern.

What is the ‘Myth vs Reality’ portal?

The “Myth vs Reality” portal is an online register launched by the ECI to combat false and misleading information related to elections. It serves as a public repository where commonly circulating claims — especially on social media — are fact-checked and clarified.

The platform covers a wide range of election-related topics, including Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs), electoral rolls, voter services, and polling procedures. It also includes frequently asked questions and reference material to help voters better understand the electoral process.

The aim is to promote transparency and ensure that voters have access to verified information, especially during sensitive election periods when misinformation can spread quickly.

What kind of claims does it debunk?

The portal regularly addresses viral claims such as alleged rigging, fake Election Commission orders, and concerns over EVM security. For instance, videos claiming to show vote manipulation in past elections have been flagged as misleading or false.

It also clarifies procedural doubts. One common myth suggests that political party agents cannot accompany polling teams during home voting — the ECI states this is incorrect, and candidates can send representatives after proper intimation.

Similarly, rumours about lack of facilities at polling stations are countered by official guidelines mandating ramps, drinking water, toilets, lighting, and other basic amenities.

The Commission also highlights provisions for senior citizens and persons with disabilities, including wheelchairs, transport support, and separate queues.

Why it matters in West Bengal polls

The West Bengal election is expected to be closely contested, with the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) facing a strong challenge from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In such a high-stakes environment, misinformation can influence voter perception and turnout.

The ECI’s portal is intended to act as a reliable source for both voters and media organisations, helping them verify claims before sharing information. The register is updated regularly, ensuring that emerging rumours are addressed promptly.
