From booth-level politics to BJP’s Bankipur bypoll candidate, here’s all about Abhishek ‘Bunty’, the party nominee taking on Jan Suraj founder Prashant Kishor

Bihar News Update: Abhishek Kumar ‘Bunty’, 41, has been associated with the BJP for nearly 26 years.
Bihar News: The upcoming Bankipur Assembly by-election in Bihar is shaping up to be one of the state’s most closely watched political battles, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) pitting its long-time organisational leader Abhishek Kumar ‘Bunty’ against Jan Suraj founder Prashant Kishor.
The contest is significant not only because it will decide the next MLA from the BJP stronghold but also because it is being viewed as a test of the BJP’s grassroots organisation against Prashant Kishor’s growing political influence.
BJP’s Trusted Organisational Face
Abhishek Kumar ‘Bunty’, 41, has been associated with the BJP for nearly 26 years. He began his political journey through student politics and booth-level organisational work before steadily rising through the party ranks.
Over the years, he has held several organisational posts, including:
- Minister
- Mandal General Secretary
- Mandal President
- Patna Metropolitan President of the BJP Yuva Morcha
- State Vice-President of the BJP Yuva Morcha (BJYM), Bihar
Within the BJP, Bunty is regarded as a grassroots worker with a strong organisational background.
For several years, he also managed election operations for former Bankipur MLA and current BJP National President Nitin Naveen, making him one of Naveen’s closest political associates.
Bunty belongs to the Kayastha community and has declared Matriculation (Class 10) as his highest educational qualification.
Assets And liabilities
According to the election affidavit filed by Abhishek Kumar Sinha, popularly known as Bunty, he does not own any immovable property.
The affidavit states that he owns:
- No residential house
- No agricultural land
- No commercial property
His total movable assets are valued at approximately Rs 19.60 lakh, which include cash, bank deposits and an 11-gram gold ring and chain. The affidavit also states that he has an outstanding loan of around Rs 10 lakh.
Why The Bankipur Bypoll Matters
The Bankipur Assembly constituency has long been considered a BJP bastion. Former MLA Nitin Naveen represented the seat for five consecutive terms before vacating it after being elected to the Rajya Sabha.
The BJP has now entrusted Bunty, seen as a loyal organisational leader, to retain the constituency.
On the other hand, Jan Suraj has fielded its founder Prashant Kishor, making the contest one of the most closely watched electoral battles in Bihar.
Test For Both Prashant Kishor And The BJP
Political observers believe the by-election goes beyond a contest between two candidates. For Prashant Kishor, the election offers an opportunity to establish Jan Suraj as a credible political force in one of the BJP’s strongest urban constituencies.
For the BJP, the bypoll will test the strength of its organisational network and cadre base in Bankipur.
The outcome is also likely to reflect on Nitin Naveen’s political influence. A victory for Bunty would reinforce Nitin Naveen’s organisational hold over the constituency, while a defeat could carry broader political implications for the BJP in Bihar.
