What was once an industrial site dominated by a glass factory and a towering smokestack has been transformed into a sprawling public park in Mount Vernon, Ohio. Ariel-Foundation Park, now covering 250 acres, combines remnants of the city’s industrial past with lakes, trails, gardens and an unusual observation tower built around a historic smokestack. The park officially opened on July 4, 2015, after years of work to transform the former industrial property. The Foundation Park Conservancy’s history describes the project as an example of adaptive reuse, preserving elements of the old factory while creating a recreational space for the community.
From steel and glass to an industrial landmark
The land had a long manufacturing history before it became a park. It was first used for a steel-casting plant before glass manufacturers moved onto the site.In 1908, Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company, later known as PPG, took over the property and established a major glassmaking operation. The factory continued operating for decades before eventually closing. Parts of the industrial complex later deteriorated, leaving behind a property that needed a new purpose. Rather than erase that history completely, planners incorporated portions of the factory ruins into the design of the future park. Today, visitors can walk among remnants of the former glassmaking facility while also exploring the park’s natural and recreational spaces.
The smokestack became the centrepiece
Perhaps the most striking reminder of the site’s industrial past is the reinforced-concrete smokestack that once served the PPG facility. Built using the slip-form method, the smokestack rises about 280 feet, making it the tallest architectural structure in Knox County, according to Ariel-Foundation Park. Instead of demolishing it, the park turned the structure into a dramatic vantage point.The result is the Rastin Observation Tower, a steel spiral staircase wrapped around the historic chimney. The observation deck sits 140 feet above the ground, reached by climbing 224 steps. The tower was made possible by a major donation from Tom Rastin and was designed as part of the park’s effort to preserve and reinterpret the site’s industrial landmarks. It opened alongside the park on July 4, 2015.
Three lakes replaced part of the industrial landscape
The transformation was not limited to the factory ruins. Ariel-Foundation Park now includes three large lakes that were created from former gravel quarries. Walking trails connect the lakes with wooded areas, earthen terraces, sculptures and preserved industrial structures. The park also connects with the Kokosing Gap Trail and Heart of Ohio Trail, expanding the recreational network beyond its own boundaries.
A view that connects two eras
Climbing the Rastin Observation Tower offers more than a high vantage point over Mount Vernon. From the deck, visitors can see the park’s lakes, greenery and remaining industrial structures, essentially taking in the transformation of the site from above.The contrast is what makes the place distinctive: a smokestack built for a working glass factory now serves as a public observation point, while former industrial land has become a destination for walking, recreation and community events.Ariel-Foundation Park’s success lies in that unusual balance. Instead of treating the site’s industrial past as something to be cleared away, the park has made that history part of the landscape, turning a once-deteriorating factory site into one of Mount Vernon’s most recognisable public spaces.
