Marking his historic milestone as India’s longest continuously serving democratically elected head of government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday delivered a blistering critique of legacy economic policies during a high-profile address to National Democratic Alliance (NDA) colleagues at Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam. Launching a direct rhetorical assault on the country’s early economic history, the Prime Minister declared that India has finally been liberated from the developmental stagnation associated with decades of Congress rule. He fundamentally challenged the historic phrase “Hindu rate of growth”—a term historically used to describe the nation’s sluggish post-independence economic expansion—arguing instead that the systemic failures belonged entirely to the Congress party and should be appropriately rebranded as the “Congress rate of growth”.

Redefining India’s Economic Narrative

The Prime Minister used the grand stage of Bharat Mandapam to dismantle decades of conventional economic nomenclature, positioning his administrative milestone as a definitive break from past limitations. For a generation, the sluggish growth rates of the mid-twentieth century were structurally attributed to cultural and domestic constraints. However, Prime Minister Modi reframed this narrative, asserting that the slow pace of development was a direct consequence of policy paralysis under previous regimes rather than any inherent limitation of the Indian populace. By shifting the accountability squarely onto the governance model of the Congress party, the address highlighted a stark ideological divide, contrasting past administrative bottlenecks with the aggressive, fast-paced development strategies championed by the current NDA administration.

The Contrast in Growth Models

Central to the Prime Minister’s address was the tangible economic divergence experienced by the nation under two distinct political philosophies. The Prime Minister maintained that the global community and the domestic electorate have now witnessed a clear, data-driven difference between the legacy “Congress rate of growth” and the contemporary “NDA rate of growth”. While older fiscal policies often conditioned the public to accept incremental progress as the national baseline, the modern era has prioritised massive infrastructure scaling, digital transformation, and aggressive capital expenditure. This operational shift has consistently propelled India into the position of one of the fastest-growing major economies globally, directly challenging the economic assumptions of the post-independence era.

A Milestone for the Alliance

The gathering at Bharat Mandapam served not only as a policy platform but also as a demonstration of unified political momentum for the ruling alliance. Addressing his alliance colleagues, the Prime Minister emphasised that economic liberation and structural reforms are continuous processes requiring stable coalition governance. As the NDA celebrates this unprecedented leadership longevity, the administration’s focus remains fixed on sustaining high-velocity GDP growth and expanding grassroots financial inclusion. By rewriting the vocabulary of India’s developmental journey, the Prime Minister has set an aggressive benchmark for the alliance’s future economic roadmap, cementing a narrative where high-speed development is established as the permanent national standard.
