TMC Rebellion News LIVE Updates: The political crisis within the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress deepened on Wednesday, with signs of a widening rebellion raising fresh questions about the party’s unity in the state Assembly.
A day after being expelled from the TMC, rebel MLA Ritabrata Banerjee arrived at the Assembly and submitted a joint letter, bearing the signatures of 58 members, to the Speaker, proposing his name as the Leader of the Opposition.
He was accompanied by several legislators, including Arup Roy, Shiuli Saha and Akhruzzaman, as he pressed his claim before the Assembly authorities.
Rebel MLAs, who are claiming to represent the “real” Trinamool Congress, are now demanding that Ritabrata Banerjee be appointed Leader of the Opposition.
Only 20 MLAs For Mamata Banerjee’s TMC?
If the numbers cited by Banerjee are accurate, it would indicate a dramatic shift in the Assembly’s political equations, leaving Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with the support of only 20 MLAs.
However, the claims have not been independently verified, and the Trinamool Congress has not issued any official response so far.
Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay Appointed Leader Of House
Amid the unfolding developments, senior TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee informed Assembly Speaker Rathindra Bose about a reshuffle in the party’s legislative leadership.
He said Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay has been appointed Leader of the House, while Ashima Patra and Nayana Bandopadhyay will serve as deputy leaders. Firhad Hakim has been named the party’s chief whip in the Assembly.
The latest developments come days after the TMC expelled MLAs Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha with immediate effect, accusing them of engaging in anti-party activities.
Since the party lost power in the state, several leaders have publicly expressed dissatisfaction with its functioning.
