Vaishali 1994 vs Bankipur 2026: The comparison isn’t obvious at first glance. Why would a single assembly bypoll be weighed against a Lok Sabha result from 32 years ago?

Prashant Kishor has won the Bankipur bypoll, a seat the BJP had held for 31 years. The Jan Suraaj founder’s victory — his first-ever election contest — has drawn comparisons to a very different upset: the 1994 Vaishali Lok Sabha bypoll, a result still cited as a turning point in Bihar’s caste politics.

The comparison isn’t obvious at first glance. Why would a single assembly bypoll be weighed against a Lok Sabha result from 32 years ago? Part of the answer lies in who held Bankipur before Kishor: outgoing MLA Nitin Nabin, recently elevated to BJP national president and Rajya Sabha member, making this — going by party hierarchy — the seat of someone technically senior to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah within the organisation.

The seat had been in the same family’s hands since Nitin Nabin’s father, Nabin Kishore Prasad, first won it, and was long considered among the BJP’s safest in Bihar. Kishor overturned that arithmetic by a margin of over 19,000 votes.

Why Did The Bankipur Bypoll Draw So Much Attention?

Three things combined to make this contest bigger than a routine bypoll: the seat’s outsized symbolic value within the BJP hierarchy, its three-decade streak as a BJP stronghold, and the fact that Kishor — a political strategist turned politician — was contesting an election himself for the first time.

All the BJP’s efforts to protect what was effectively its “boss’s seat” failed to hold, News18 Hindi reported.

How Was The Ground Prepared For The 1994 Upset?

To understand the Vaishali parallel, the backstory goes to the early 1990s. After becoming chief minister in 1990, Lalu Prasad Yadav dominated Bihar’s politics so thoroughly that little seemed to dent him politically, even as his OBC- and Dalit-focused rhetoric grew increasingly combative toward upper castes.

During the inauguration of a new block in Dehri-on-Sone — a project pushed by his road-transport minister Ilyas Hussain — Lalu reportedly made remarks about “janeu-dharis” (sacred-thread wearers), declaring he didn’t hold the thread or its wearers in any regard and vowing to “teach them a lesson” in the name of the poor and backward classes.

This came alongside a string of provocative slogans attributed to him during that period, and against the backdrop of the Mandal Commission’s implementation, which had already split Bihar along caste lines.

Upper castes — Brahmins, Bhumihars, and Rajputs in particular — were furious. Around the same time, Rajput strongman Anand Mohan was emerging as a direct challenger to OBC strongman Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, and his popularity among upper castes was rising fast — a trend Lalu reportedly found unsettling.

What Exactly Happened In 1994 Vaishali Bypoll?

The sudden death of sitting Janata Dal MP Shivsharan Singh forced a bypoll in Vaishali in 1994. Anand Mohan, by then head of his newly formed Bihar People’s Party (BPP), fielded his wife Lovely Anand as the party’s candidate, positioning her as the face of a broader upper-caste consolidation against Lalu’s politics.

Congress countered with Kishori Sinha, wife of former CM Satyendra Narayan Sinha, who had Lalu’s backing.

The contest was fought less on local issues than on the larger question of challenging Lalu’s dominance.

Counting took place at LS College in Muzaffarpur; with ballot-paper voting, the process ran long, and Anand Mohan and Lovely Anand reportedly tracked the tally from a nearby house before her win was declared around 5:30 pm.

Anand Mohan then arrived at the counting centre to a roaring reception and, according to News18 Hindi, told the media with great confidence that he would become Bihar’s chief minister within the next six months.

The remark energised his supporters further, and BPP’s membership drive picked up pace as upper castes rallied around him as a potential answer to Lalu’s rule.

That momentum didn’t last. Within months, Bhumihar strongman Chhotan Shukla was murdered, and Gopalganj DM G Krishnaiah was killed by a mob during Shukla’s funeral procession.

Anand Mohan’s name surfaced in the related cases, and his political trajectory unravelled from there — he was eventually convicted, while Lovely Anand went on to win seats in her own right across different parties.

Why Is Bankipur Being Compared To Vaishali?

Throughout the Bankipur campaign, Kishor repeatedly said he wasn’t contesting to become an MLA or seeking votes on local civic issues, but to challenge what he called the BJP’s overconfidence and to build a non-RJD, non-BJP alternative in Bihar.

He framed the contest as a referendum on Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary specifically, telling voters — per News18 Hindi’s report — that Choudhary was allegedly guilty in a murder case and that no clear proof of his educational qualifications existed.

Kishor maintained throughout that a win or loss for him personally wouldn’t change the government’s numbers, but would send a message. Following his victory, his first public reaction was a demand for Choudhary’s removal.

Like Anand Mohan three decades earlier, Kishor comes from an upper-caste (Brahmin) background and appears to have drawn votes across caste lines in a BJP stronghold.

The comparison is also being drawn against a live backdrop: reported upper-caste discontent in Bihar over the UGC regulations row, the Bharat Tiwari encounter, social-media campaigns against reservation, and the state government’s handling of the Gen-Z protests — with critics alleging the BJP has taken the upper-caste vote for granted rather than addressing this discontent directly.
