Politics briefly gave way to a Bollywood faux pas at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Thursday.

As Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Dimple Yadav arrived at the protest site to extend support to activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on a hunger strike for 20 days now, the stage announcer, a Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leader, attempted to welcome her with a formal introduction. But midway through the sentence came an unexpected plot twist.

“Aap se milne ke liye, desh ki yuva sansad, Samajwadi Party se Dimple Kapadia ji humare…”

The problem? It wasn’t Bollywood veteran Dimple Kapadia walking onto the stage; it was Dimple Yadav.

Before the announcer could finish, the crowd burst into laughter and immediately corrected him. Realising the mix-up, he quickly apologised and corrected himself: “Dimple Yadav ji…”

The brief gaffe has since taken on a life of its own on social media, with users joking that for a few seconds, politics had accidentally wandered into a film set.

Fortunately for the announcer, Dimple Yadav appeared to take the moment in her stride, and the programme continued without any awkwardness.

Dimple Yadav’s visit to Jantar Mantar comes just two days after party chief and her husband, Akhilesh Yadav, spoke with Wangchuk over phone to inquire about his health and urge him to break his fast.

Wangchuk has been protesting against irregularities in the NEET-UG 2026 examination and the CBSE’s on-screen marking system. On Thursday, the Centre, in its first response to the strike, assured the Delhi High Court that it would provide any required medical intervention based on the assessment of government doctors monitoring his health.

Taking note of the Centre’s submission, the Delhi High Court directed authorities to conduct daily clinical monitoring of Wangchuk’s health and provide medical treatment whenever required. “We observe that the life of any citizen is precious and all efforts ought to be made by government authorities to save the same,” the Bench said, adding that it appreciated the Centre’s stand before disposing of the petition.

Addressing the media during a medical briefing on Thursday, doctors detailed the severe physical toll the prolonged fast has taken on the activist’s body. Wangchuk’s total weight loss has now breached the 9-kilogram mark, bringing his current body weight down to 56.9 kilograms.

Activist Sonam Wangchuk has lost over nine kg after 19 days of hunger strike, with his blood pressure recorded at 105/61 mmHg while lying down and 101/65 mmHg while sitting. His blood sugar level was 80 mg/dL and pulse rate was 72 bpm.

The government has ordered a CBI inquiry into the NEET-UG 2026 irregularities following allegations of a paper leak. The National Testing Agency (NTA) cancelled the May 3 examination and will announce new dates for a re-exam.

The protest, which began on June 20 over alleged examination system irregularities, is aimed at reshaping India’s political discourse and seeking wider reforms, not just a single resignation.
